Lord Kitchener thought that Selous was too old for the job but relented eventually. They were the 25th (Frontiersmen) Bn Royal Fusiliers. A search will find more on these men. Simon would have fitted right in and it wouldn't be laughable or stretching the imagination because there were older men than Simon fighting in the unit. including Selous. I often put aside a book to google events and places mentioned in historical fiction. What makes your novels stand out, apart from the great stories, is the choice of less well used historical periods. Rome and Napoleonic have been done to death but Fonthill and co. occupy a rich period in British history which seems untouched by other authors. Can't wait for the next book and I truly hope Simon adventures well into his 70's and beyond, after all why should a heroic action hero be young?Trollmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04161355518591137868noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5813103782490459672.post-5328153068538636232013-09-07T17:47:28.144-07:002013-09-07T17:47:28.144-07:00Read all the Fonthills books and liked all of them...Read all the Fonthills books and liked all of them,
However I did feel Fire Across The Veldt ended a bit quick, glad to read there are more to come.

Any chance we might see an older Fonthill being involved in the WW1 action in Africa ?

Cheers
SteveSteveHBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10796513233032194355noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5813103782490459672.post-16842533229974655392013-07-20T16:59:36.843-07:002013-07-20T16:59:36.843-07:00Im sure I will get round to reading this soon, Jus...Im sure I will get round to reading this soon, Just discovered this series and as a fan of Forrester and O'brein im allready hooked.

Prehaps in a couple of books time we will see Fonthill at the seige of Mafeking! It will see the Regular Three - Simon, Alice and Jenkins - fighting in the second Anglo-Boer War, ending in 2002. Will it be the last Fonthill? Frankly, I don't know.
